NATURE. SUSTAINABILITY. FUTURE.
Sustainability, environmental protection, and strong collaboration are part of our daily business – we know there is a lot to be done. Among our focus areas are the utilization of sustainable energies, the conservation of water resources, reforestation, recyclable packaging solutions and biological crop protection.
WE OBVIOUSLY THINK OF SUSTAINABILITY.
Preserving nature is an integral part of our work. But what exactly does this mean? How are we specifically protecting our planet? Here is an overview of the main sustainability topics and issues that we deal with.
WATER MUST BE SAVED
The banana plants need regular watering to grow. Water is also needed for cleaning the bananas after harvest. Therefore, one of the most important challenges is: How to save and recycle water?
Efficient water recycling, treatment systems and recirculation systems are proven solutions to save water. This allows up to 50% of the water to be reused. These systems are constantly being optimized and developed further.
Large rainfall water reservoirs at the farms contribute to significant savings.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
Sustainable energy is not a topic of the future, but a matter of the present. We know that fossil fuels are not a long-term and sustainable solution. It's much better to work with renewable energy sources – and that's exactly what we do.
A central aspect: The power supply is almost exclusively guaranteed by hydropower plants.
Clean energy: solar panels were installed on the farm roofs to generate sustainable electricity in a sustainable way.
THIS IS HOW WE PROTECT OUR PLANTS
Good crop protection that allows the bananas to grow safely does not always have to be chemical. There are better alternatives which we rely on. Be it with biological pesticides or through mechanical weed control: We are committed to near-natural protection.
Reduction of chemical agents and increased use of organic & ecological active ingredients.
Overall, the use of plant protection products has been significantly reduced. This is achieved, for example, by means of mechanical weed control, in which no harmful substances are used.
CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY & ECOSYSTEMS
The rainforest must be preserved.
To counteract climate change, rainforests are people's best allies. Large areas at the farms are therefore made available for reforestation purposes, to protect habitats and ensure the survival of native species.
New endemic trees are regularly planted, ensuring the tree population is protected and preserved.
In addition, training is provided to raise awareness among farm staff on fauna and flora conservation.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR EACH OTHER
Supporting communities on-site is an important part of our philosophy. We believe that taking responsibility also means actively supporting the local communities. This is the only way to really help shape the future.
We work exclusively with Rainforest Alliance certified partners.
In 2021, we made a significant contribution to the establishment and financing of a new school in Urabá (Colombia).
All our partners are subject to a Code of Conduct and are committed to ensuring safe and fair working conditions.
OUR CERTIFICATIONS.
Our business approach is based on fairness and high-quality standards. Correspondingly, we are certified.
Fairtrade
The Fairtrade label identifies goods that originate from fair trade conditions and whose production complies with strict social, ecological, and economic criteria.
Rainforest Alliance
Rainforest Alliance recognizes companies that promote responsible business practices with a focus on conserving natural resources, improving people’s living conditions, and supporting human rights.
Organic agriculture
The EU organic logo identifies foodstuffs that originate from controlled organic farming. The criteria for awarding the label are based on the current regulations in accordance with the EC Organic Regulation (EEC) 91/2092 on organic farming.
IFS
THE FOCUS OF IFS IS ON FOOD SAFETY AND THE QUALITY OF PROCESSES AND PRODUCTS.
Global G.A.P.
Global G.A.P. is committed to improving food safety. This certification scheme is mainly engaged in quality management. Other Global G.A.P. objectives include sustainable production methods, responsible water use, and protection of workers' well-being.
